Ingrown Toe Nail Treatment



An ingrown toenail occurs when the sides of the toenail grow into the surrounding skin. The toenail curls and pierces the skin, which becomes red, swollen and tender.

  • A common problem in adolescents and young adults 
  • Usually affects hallux 
  • Due to the lateral edge of nail cutting and growing into adjacent soft tissue 
  • May get superimposed bacterial and fungal infection 

Causes

  • Poor-fitting shoes 
  • Poor foot care 
  • Poor nail cutting

Conservative

  • Regular soaking of foot 
  • Careful drying after washing 
  • Well fitting shoes
  • Cutting nails transversely 
  • Cotton wool under nail 

Ablation of nail bed 

Surgical or chemical 

Partial (wedge) or complete (Zadek’s)
